Owl Golfers Claim Third In Murfreesboro

The varsity golf team completed their 2006 season yesterday in the final round of the state tournament, held at the Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro, as they finished third overall, three strokes ahead of MBA.

The Owls entered day two in fifth place, shooting a team-total 296 on the first day. Though they shot 308 on day two, the tough conditions on the course hurt other teams as well, and the Owls persevered to grab the third spot.

MUS was led by sophomore Drew Frisby, who followed up his first-day 71 with a 77 on day two to finish tied for eighth overall. Other Owl finishers for Coach Greg King's squad included senior Dev Varma (75/76 - 151), senior Daniel Brown (72/81 - 153), junior Paul Billings (80/74 - 154), and freshman Wilson Orr (78/82 - 160).

Baylor won the event easily, shooting 577 overall and finishing seventeen strokes ahead of runner-up Knoxville Webb. The Owls followed their third-place region showing with this third-place finish as they defeated both ECS and CBHS, the two teams that had finished ahead of them at region.

The third-place showing also matched last-year's finish as Coach King continues his streak of finishing in the top-three at state every year as varsity coach.

Golfers In Fifth After Day One

The MUS varsity golf team has completed their first round in state-tournament action at the Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro as they are currently in fifth place overall, just six shots out of the second spot.

The Owls shot a team total 296 during the first day, led by sophomore Drew Frisby's 1-under, 71. Senior Daniel Brown also had a good round, shooting par-72. Other Owl finishers included senior Dev Varma's 75, freshman Wilson Orr's 78, and junior Paul Billings's 80. 

State-power Baylor is dominating the tournament, leading by fifteen shots after round one as Red Raiders are claiming three of the top four individual spots. Frisby is currently tied for sixth overall with his 71.

Though a state title may be out of reach, the Owls can claim a runner-up spot with five good individual rounds tomorrow (only the top four rounds are counted). They will look to accomplish that feat as the final round begins at 8:00 a.m.

Golfers Finish Third At Region

The varsity golf team placed third in the 2006 regional golf tournament, held September 28 at Orgill in Millington.

Five Owls played, and the top-four scores counted. 

Leading MUS was sophomore Drew Frisby, shooting a 72 and finishing third overall.  The fine round earned Frisby all-tournament honors.

Other scores for Coach Greg King's squad included 77's by senior Dev Varma and freshman Wilson Orr and 79's by senior Daniel Brown and junior Paul Billings.

The Owls overall shot 305, just one shot off the lead, held by CBHS and ECS.  The Purple Wave ended up taking the title in a playoff.

With the finish, MUS earns a state-tournament bid.  This year's state tournament will be held October 10-11 at the Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro.

Owl Golfer Honored

Sophomore Jordan Brown was named the Commercial Appeal's Boys Athlete of the Week for his performance in the Owls' golf match against St. Benedict on August 22. 

Brown won medalist honors as he shot -1 (34) for nine holes at Galloway, leading MUS to the 8-stroke victory, 158-166.

The Owls have gotten off to a good start so far in 2006, going 3-2 with victories over White Station, St. Benedict, and SBEC.

Good luck to Brown and his teammates this season.

Golfers Finish Third At State

The MUS varsity golf team claimed third at the 2005 Division II State Golf Tournament by shooting a team total of 602 over two days, 19 shots off the pace set by Baylor and Knoxville Webb.

At The Bear Trace Golf Course at Ross Creek Landing in Clinton, Tennessee, the Owls entered Day 2 in third, just seven strokes off the lead.  However, both Baylor and Webb pulled away from MUS on the second day as Baylor claimed the title in a playoff, their twelfth golf championship overall.

Senior Bobby Hudson, the defending individual state champion, finished fourth overall in 2005, shooting 69-76 (145) on the par-72 course. He finished ten strokes behind Baylor’s Harris English, the individual state champion.   

Senior Bowers Clement had a good tournament as he made a nice run on the second day, shooting par after his 74 on Day 1 to finish at 146 and claim fifth overall.

Rounding out the field for the Owls were junior Daniel Brown (76-77-153), senior Alex Snyder (78-80-158), and junior Adam Bomar, who followed up freshman Drew Frisby’s 81 on the first day with an 82 on Day 2. 

Congratulations to Coach Greg King and the golf team for their fine season, which included an 18-4 regular-season record and a regional championship.

Golfers In Third After Day 1 Of State Tourney

After Day 1 of the 2005 Division II State Golf Tournament at The Bear Trace Golf Course at Ross Creek Landing in Clifton, TN, the MUS varsity golf team is currently in third place, shooting a 297, seven strokes behind leader Knoxville Webb and six strokes behind defending champion Baylor.

Senior Bobby Hudson, the defending individual state champion, is tied for second overall, shooting a 69, two strokes behind Harris English of Baylor. 

Other Owl finishes after Day 1 include Bowers Clement (74), Daniel Brown (76), Alex Snyder (78), and Drew Frisby (81).

MUS players know that they have lower rounds in them and will look to challenge tomorrow as they go for their fifth overall state title. The first Owl to tee off tomorrow will be Frisby at 9:03 a.m.

Golfers Claim Another Regional Title

The MUS varsity golf team will be heading into state-tournament action with critical momentum as they easily claimed the Division II West Regional Tournament title, held yesterday at Orgill in Millington.

The Owls won their eleventh regional championship with surprising ease as they shot 292, besting ECS (305) and CBHS (307), two squads that had defeated MUS in the regular season.

Coach Greg King’s squad was led by medalist Bobby Hudson, who shot 68, a score that also earned him All-Tournament honors.  Senior Alex Synder (73), who finished fourth, and freshman Drew Frisby (75), who claimed fifth, also made the All-Tournament team. 

Rounding out the fine team effort were senior Bowers Clement (77) and junior Daniel Brown (80).

With an 18-4 regular season and the regional title, MUS will look to better their runner-up state finish from last season at the 2005 State Tournament, to be held October 18 and 19 at Ross Creek Landing in Clifton, TN.

Golfers Gear Up For Postseason Run

The varsity golf team improved their record to 16-3 this past week with solid victories over Tipton Rosemark Academy and SBEC as they prepare for the postseason. 

First, the Owls easily handled TRA, 158-198, on September 13 at Orgill as they were led by medalist Dev Varma, who shot 2-over 38. Also contributing to the Owls’ decisive victory were freshman Jordan Brown (39), eighth-grader Wilson Orr (40), and junior Crispin Watson (41). 

Then, following the win over the Rebels, the Owls played September 15 against SBEC, the defending regional tournament champions, having defeated MUS by four strokes last year. The Owls had a great team effort as they won at Northcreek, 149-153, despite not having the lowest individual score. 

Senior Bowers Clement (35) led the Owls, shooting 1-under. He was followed by freshman Drew Frisby (37), junior Daniel Brown (38), junior Adam Bomar (39), and Watson (41). 

The Owls next play ECS and Briarcrest this Thursday, September 22, at the TPC at Southwind. The match starts at 2:00 p.m.

Owl Golfers Claim Second at State

The MUS varsity golf team finished up the second and final day of the TSSAA Division II state tourney, held at Bear Trace in Crossville, Tennessee, with an incredible 302 to finish the two-day tournament shooting a team total of 602.  Though this score is excellent, it fell just short, two strokes behind Baylor but sixteen ahead of ECS.

The first day the Owls shot a 300, putting them in first place, nine strokes ahead of Baylor.  However, Baylor played excellent golf during the second round, shooting a 291 to win the state title.

Junior Bobby Hudson played consistent, excellent golf as he won the individual state title by six strokes, shooting a 70-70 – 140.  Other Owl golfers who participated in the state tourney were junior Alex Snyder with a 73-78 – 151, senior Richard White with a 77-78 – 155, sophomore Daniel Brown with an 80-76 – 156, sophomore Dev Varma with an 85 on day one, and senior Peter Dale with an 86 on day two.

Owl Golfers in First Place after Day One at State

The MUS varsity golf team leads the TSSAA Division II state tourney, held at the Bear Trace Golf Course at Cumberland Mountain State Park in Crossville, Tennessee, after the first day of play with a team score of 300, nine strokes ahead of Baylor and eleven strokes ahead of ECS.

Junior Bobby Hudson leads the Owls and the tournament with a score of 70.  Also representing the Owls in the tournament are junior Alex Snyder with a 73, senior Richard White with a 77, sophomore Daniel Brown with an 80, and sophomore Dev Varma with an 85.

The second and final day of the tournament will take place today, Wednesday, September 29.
