Despite a strong effort, the varsity basketball team saw their season end at the hands of defending state champion Brentwood Academy, 64-40, at the Division II State Basketball Tournament in Nashville before Spring Break.
The Owls fell behind quickly, 8-0, but fought back and trailed only by eight, 32-24, with 1:26 remaining in the half. However, the Eagles scored the final four points of the half to regain the momentum and put the pressure on MUS. Jay Martin led the Owls with 9 points at the half, and the Owls shot 47% in the first half to keep them in the game.
Yet Brentwood was just too strong for MUS. The Eagles, who had not lost to a team from Tennessee all year and who went on to win their third straight title later in the week, outscored the Owls, 18-6, in the third quarter and were never threatened again.
MUS kept the game respectable but could not match up with the depth, size, and talent of BA. Martin led the Owls in scoring with 14 points, while John Stokes added 4 points and 6 rebounds. Brandan Wright, the Division II Mr. Basketball and tournament MVP, led the Eagles with 20 points and 8 rebounds.
With the loss, MUS ends their year at 16-14.
