The MUS Leadership Seminar is poised to begin its second year. The first session on Leadership Theory will be held on Wednesday, February 4 from 2.30 to 3.00 in the Wunderlich Auditorium. If a student plans to run for a Student Council office this spring then he must attend. Other aspiring leaders of organizations, groups and teams are strongly encouraged to attend. If a student has a conflict with the Wednesday afternoon session, a morning session will be held on Thursday, February 5 in room 200 from 7.15 to 7.45. See Coach Cady if there are other issues involving attendance. See the power point presentation and handout for the session below.
Friday night, January 23 the Owls will battle the Eagles of St. Benedict in the Ross M. Lynn arena. The Homecoming dance will begin right after the game (approx. 9 pm) and will feature Al Kapone, a popular local artist. Come rock the house with Al and his band until 11.30 pm. Cost is $15 per person.
The Student Council will hold a Rummage Sale on Saturday, September 20 from 7 am to 1 pm in the Campus Center parking lot on the east side of the campus. Each morning, 9/15 to 9/20 donations will be accepted in this same parking lot. If you have items you would like to donate at another time than this, please call John Cady at 260-1367 and arrangements will be made. Clothing, electronics, furniture, toys and other misc. items will make excellent sale items and the proceeds will be directed back to the student body in the form of Student Council functions such as the Spring Formal and FallFest.
Student Council Activities Fair, aka Club Sign Up Day will be this Friday 9/12 in the Campus Center Ballroom from 10.20 to 10.40. To charter a club, one must complete the Club Charter form and must have a faculty advisor's signature. Before chartering a club, be sure to read the club guidelines found in the U Book on pages 58 and 76. Clubs must have a faculty advisor and meet at least once per quarter for an activity to maintain their charter. The Club Charter forms are due by 1p.m. this Thursday. You may print off the form from this blog or you may obtain one in Coach Cady's box in the Counseling Center.
The 2008-09 Student Council Officers opened the school year ready to serve. Taking the second Friday Chapel of the year (August 22), the officers introduced themselves and announced plans for the upcoming year. One of the first activities was the renewal of Student Forums, held by the President and other officers to give the student body a voice in school matters. The forum was held in the Wunderlich Auditorium on Thursday, 8/28 during the second half of senior high lunch. Many students attended and issues were addressed.
Another effort of the council was the restoration of the tradition of the Victory Dance, a sort of back to school dance held after the first home football game of the season. The dance will be held in the Campus Center Ballroom on Friday, August 29 from 9.15 to 11.30. Elmo and the Shades will rock the house with their combination of soul and rock. Tickets are $10 at the door.
The application process for 8th Grade Mentors is now open. Current Juniors and Seniors are eligible to serve as mentors. To apply: complete the one page application below, compose a brief personal resume, and submit both documents to Coach Cady in the counseling center by Friday August 22nd.
Student Council campaign speeches will take place in the Hyde Chapel on Wednesday, April 16 from 8.30 to 9.50. The order of the speeches will be the reverse of the nomination process with the Secretary - Treasurer candidates going first and the Presidential candidates going last.
The 2008 MUS Spring Formal will be held on Saturday, May 10. The location this year is the National Ornamental Metal Museum, right on the Mississippi River in Downtown Memphis. Maps to the dance can be found on the school website with other dance information. The band this year is Elmo and the Shades, please check out their website with audio samples and a song list:

Tickets are on sale in the business office at a price of $40 per couple. No sales at the dance so buy your tickets early.
Election week is upon us. One of the most enduring traditions of MUS is the annual process of electing student leaders for the upcoming year. As the torch of leadership is passed, important decisions are made by the student body regarding who will lead the school when things start back up in the fall. A hallmark of MUS is the freedom granted to the students by the administration and the expectation that the students will lead.
A three week Leadership Seminar was held earlier this spring to help prepare students for the responsibilities of holding office and other prominent positions in the school. The convening of the Red and Blue conventions on Wednesday, April 9 will mark the beginning of the campaign. The following Tuesday, Blue and Red party skits will be held from 10.15 to 10.45 and the next day speeches will be given during chapel by all candidates. Election day is Thursday, April 17, a day of voting and feasting at the annual street party thrown by the candidates.
Please visit the U Book for details about the entire process (71 to 78 contain the Constitution of the Council). MUS is proud of its tradition of exposing our students to the democratic process that makes our country so strong and so unique.
