The following boys medaled this weekend at the Collierville Open Wrestling Tournament:

Congratulations to the Lower School Swim Team for winning their 1st meet of the season.

Also, congratulations to the 100-yard Medley Relay Team of Thornton Brooksbank, Austin Dobbs, Sherman Tabor, and Pierce Rose for setting a new SHELBY COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL RECORD with a time of 56.36.  This shattered the old record of 1:00.89.

The next meet will be Saturday, December 12 at the Germantown Athletic Club.  It should start no earlier than noon.  Email Coach Whitney at weclark@memphis.edu about whether you will be there or not.

Wrestling info, directions to meets

The Lower School  wrestlers open their season tomorrow evening at Briarcrest High School. Wrestling will begin at 6:00 p.m. in their Middle School cafeteria. We will also be wrestling against St. George as well.  The competition should end around 8:30 p.m. 

The next competition date for the wrestlers will be Saturday, November 28 (for those wrestlers who will be in town) at Collierville High School (expect to arrive at 9:00 a.m. and wrestle at 10).  We will also be wrestling in tournaments December 12 at St. George's, Collierville and Germantown High School December 19 with more details to follow later on these tournaments.

Lower School wrestlers should select "folk style" when they log on to join USA Wrestling  - this is the governing body for Middle School wrestling events in our area, and membership is required for tournament participation.

Basketball tryouts tonight

Tonight in the Ross M. Lynn Arena will be the Lower School basketball tryouts for both the seventh grade and eighth grade teams. Beginning at 6:00 p.m. the seventh grade practices for an hour, and the eighth grade begins at 7:00 p.m. and finishes at 8:00.

These are competitive teams, and that means that all who try out do not make the squad. Therefore, the Buzzard intramural seventh and eighth grade teams will be available for all interested students. Announcements will come later in the month for these teams. The Physical Education department pairs the squads for a stab at equity. The league and schedule will be announced once teams are established.   

Tonight's seventh grade football game

Players be at school by 5:00 p.m. Game starts at 5:45. Blue team wears blue, and Red team wears white. Bring both jerseys if in doubt. This game is a lot of fun, so get ready for a good time. Coach Bobby Alston will speak to the guys (always a treat), and come rain or shine, it's football time this afternoon!

Coach Burnett writes: On behalf of Craig Christenbury, Rankin Fowlkes, Drew Harris, and Scott Williams I want to thank you for allowing your boys to be a part of our team this season.  In an earlier email I mentioned to you that we would not allow the boys to use our opponents age or size as an excuse or crutch. To a man, they never brought it up and I consider that a victory. Thanks also for the many words of encouragement to the boys and to us. They will not remember all the games but they will remember your support.  Many thanks again.

Wrestling opportunity

Coach John Knaff visited the boys today during assembly to offer wrestling as a possibility for interested Lower Schoolers. As the seasonal athletic teams transition emerges from the the horizon, boys are going to want new opportunities for involvement, and wrestling is indeed one, requiring a unique setting for showcasing its stuff or the boys, of all sizes and shapes, will probably never consider the opportunity. Swim Wednesday!

The first day of Lower School Swim practice will be Wednesday, October 21 from 3:45 – 5:45 p.m.  Please try and get your swimmer to the Nuber YMCA.  We will work out car pooling arrangements with Varsity swimmers on Wednesday for the following week, for those who would like to carpool.
