They did it. After months of preparation, the inaugural Lower School Orchestra performed before the Hyde Chapel faithful Monday night, December 5. Under the skilled, patient, and inspiring direction of Mrs. Stephanie Hancock, four distinct groups played in the concert: the Concert Band, the Beginning Band, the Owl Strings, and the Jazz Ensemble. Mrs. Hancock integrated these boys into various combos throughout the evening.
The two-year effort to get to last night was the brainchild of Mrs. Hancock. A veteran of establishing orchestras in schools, Mrs. Hancock began her most recent work at PDS last year with the PDS Orchestra. In concert with the MUS administration, the plan was that those boys who choose to attend MUS upon PDS graduation (a wise choice) would bring their skills, experience, and momentum to the MUS seventh grade still under her direction as they continued to build on their foundations. Engrafting new orchestra members in the seventh grade with her PDS tribe, all the while maintaining her work at PDS, Mrs. Hancock is truly a maestro.
