Single-Sex education continues to be a topic of growing interest nationally. Again, something that Memphis citizens have practiced for a long time in select independent schools seems to be novel, if not anachronistic, to many. The article linked here will appear in Sunday's New York Times.
Congratulations to the newly-elected rising eighth grade Honor Council representatives Hurston Reed and Matt Bolton. Also, congratulations go out to the newly-elected rising ninth grade Honor Council Reps Wil Hergenrader and Garrott Graham.
These young men were part of some hotly contested, positively competitive run-offs aimed at achieving a mathematical majority, so I want to impress upon everyone how seriously the boys executed the process. Truly, the experience makes me proud every year, and it reminds us how these young men are maturing into accepting more responsibility.
Given the cold, windy weather today, I am going to make today's workout
optional. We also have a number of guys who are ball boys today at the racket
club and will be absent. Matt will be at the tennis center if you want to hit
some balls, but if you don't, warmer days (hopefully) lie ahead for Monday's
Wow. The last few days have been quite a whirlwind in the Hull Lower School that we have not blogged in a while. Some of the past week's happenings we'll discuss this upcoming Friday morning with the fathers. It could provide practical insight into the accelerated world of middle school-age boys in our fast society.

Due to the
weather forecast on Sunday, we are going to play the odds and cancel both the
7th and 8th grade tryouts and reschedule them
for Monday. Additionally, 7th or 8th graders who are unable
to attend any of the two tryouts this weekend
may attend Monday's tryout. While it is preferred that all interested
participants be present and participate in both tryouts, it is understood
that conflicts may exist requiring a player's time elsewhere.
updated tryout schedule is as follows:
grade - 9:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
- 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Rescheduled for Monday
8th grade - 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
are reminded to be dressed in baseball attire plus bring tennis shoes, spikes,
glove, and bat plus any additional gear of use.
This is a great story. I categorize this posting under "The Big Picture" because it is a fine example of the depth of the human spirit embodied in an unlikely character. One need not be a fan of sport (although this is a sports story) or familiar with boys (although this is most assuredly a story about a boy) to share the essence of joy this event allowed. In a small way, we in the education business see glimpses of this every day, but this deal takes the cake!
