The MUS Civic Service Club has organized an emergency fund drive for the victims of hurricane Katrina. Proceeds will go towards providing emergency supplies to the victims.
The Civic Service Club is trying to give the boys an extra incentive by having a competition among the various homerooms to see who can raise the most money. The recommended donation is $10; boys are welcome to give more, but don't need to feel pressure to do so.
The winning homeroom will receive some movie passes as their prize for raising the most money.
I know when I was their age, I would probably have asked my Mom for some money (and she would have given me some), but in retrospect, I wish she wouldn't have. Being forced to think about and then give some of my personal savings (from allowance and work) would have taught me more about altruism than I learned by asking my parents to contribute. I'm not sure I would have been happy about learning such a lesson back then, but I still think it would have been worthwhile.
